Abundance - Pastor's Pen for 23rd July 2022

Piha panorama

It seems funny to be speaking of abundance in a winter that we already want to see the back of, with hospitals at breaking point and inflation rising for households. Yet that is what I feel free to do.

Recently I was lying in my bed and discerned a word from the Lord (not a frequent experience for me). "Wait and see what I will do." Sometimes you just know when something is from God because of the accompanying solid sense of peace about it. Not very scientific but it works for me.

In times of struggle, or lack, or winter, God is able to work because we are more likely to be aware of the external stimuli that are challenging us, and reach out to God. We notice the signs of the times and begin to pray. When things are easy, human nature normally just potters along, not so attuned to reaching out for God. Good on you if you are consistent no matter what.

I can speak of abundance in this season simply because the resources of God are not limited by human reckoning. The love of God is an abundant resource, according to Apostle Paul;

I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Eph 3: 16-19 NRSV)

I confess to you I cannot help more than a tingle of anxiety as 9.30am on a Sunday draws near. This three year season of Covid (and whatever else) has meant our numbers are low generally, and winter illnesses are pushing back on our ability to show up in good shape. However, it is so great to receive encouraging feedback from online participants and to see some faces in person that haven't been around for a while. That was my experience this last Sunday, and it was most welcome.

Come what may, let us remain confident in the abundant fullness of the love of God, and that Father, Son and Holy Spirit have the power and desire to lead us forward with steady hope and growing faith. Wait and see what God will do.
