The Way - Pastor's Pen for 19th July 2026

Shepherds Park, last Sunday
Shepherds Park, last Sunday

The trail through Shepherds Park towards Kaipatiki Road is a much smoother run than a couple of years ago. The addition of numerous trail-flattening upgrades, like footbridges and grading the knobbly bits, has domesticated it quite thoroughly. Dear reader, I once would have scoffed at such gentrifying modifications making it 'too easy.' But now, my wobbly calf, knee and hip conditions are glad of them. The way is clear and the going is much improved without the uneven ground, gullies and mud wallowing.

For our sermon this week, I'll be preaching from John 14, in which Jesus says to Thomas; “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." So for those disciples, and all would be followers of Jesus through the ages, the way is clear. Follow Jesus.

When there are three things that must be considered, I find my mind needs some time. Gerard Sloyan helped me in this case, writing; "To be on the way is to know truth and have life." Adding those verbs to be, to know and to have really helped me to apply this well known teaching of Jesus to my life.

I hope that whatever challenges come your way you may remain resolute in following the way of Jesus, that the path is clear to you. If you know Jesus, you know the Father and it is the Holy Spirit who gives us the strength and wisdom to stay the course. Amen
