As we approach Christmas once again, we can pause to give thanks that we live in relative peace and security, in a somewhat temperate climate, with the prospect of a reasonably good holiday season. This week I read of a heatwave in Australia, with Penrith topping 40 degrees. This English boy would melt. Today I learned that Vanuatu has been devastated by a major earthquake, with significant loss of life and infrastructure thrown into chaos. Conflicts escalate round the world, the latest hotspot being Syria. One never knows what is next!
The other day some of us attended the de-consecration service for the chapel at Lady Allum village. Some sadness was mixed with thanksgiving. I was struck by the stained glass, which will be thankfully repurposed in a meaningful way. One window contains many references to life on the Shore, the landforms and native flora. It speaks of "Te Maungarongo ki te Whenua" trans: - "the peace of the land."
Let us pray for the peace of the land, and indeed the world, as we enter into the Festive season and New Year. Pray that we will dwell in peace and know God's presence.
Let me acknowledge that I know some of your are carrying grief and uncertainty into this season, so it will be difficult to be merry. In spite of this annual rest from our usual schedule (yes I get three Sundays off!) we will not take a holiday from praying for one another and all the things God places on our hearts. May you know the indwelling of the Prince of Peace, Emmanuel, God with us. Shalom
