City from Maungauika/North Head, last Sunday
It's good to get out in nature, and it's surprising how many opportunities we have around here to enjoy that in small ways. Auckland's volcanic cones are pockets of history and greenery in the city. I personally need this as an antidote to a desk job, always have. You wouldn't like me much without it. This weekend we are off to Rotorua for a circuit breaker weekend, including some time in the Redwoods, racing around. Excellent.
My son's sharp ears picked up the sound of a road crash at lunchtime on Sunday, so Fiona and I rushed out to see what was happening. We ended up duct-taping the front grille back onto one car, and using a garden saw to facilitate the smooth removal of another car from the shrubbery over the road. Fiona's pretty good with a saw, and I'm good at running about. More stuff in the real world. The real people involved were glad of our participation in their calamity, providing some comfort and practical assistance with the tools at hand.
So much of life is lived online or through media these days. It's so good to get in the real world, feel the fresh air and do something practical. Modern life can be overly curated, voyeuristic, wrapped in plastic or removed from reality. We can comment on things we have no context for, and know little about. God's world is creation in all its imperfect variety, and involves real-life human connection. This is where our faith finds its true grounding, in the real world.
