Last week was busy in a different way than the usual rhythm of things. Several of us leaders attended ABIDE, a conference hosted by Laidlaw College on the campus of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell. The conference was for pastors and other church leaders. Our attendance was supported by Forrest Hill Presbyterian, which was much appreciated.
Often, when I go off to things and then return, trying to articulate what happened and capture the essence it is very difficult. It was an added bonus that others shared the experience with me. I tried out a session of ministry coaching, which was illuminating and helpful.
Fiona and I went to the Eco-church presentation, which was very thought provoking. Statistically speaking, many young people, including Christians, are exceedingly anxious about a future with human-induced climate change, yet many churches don't even talk about it, our our role of stewardship in God's creation. Our spirituality needs a broader, ecological, more planet focused perspective perhaps?
Our worship was deliberately offered both in English and te reo Māori, showing a movement within the churches of creating contemporary music from within our own land, without relying on what comes out of America or the UK so much. Refreshing.
Our keynote speakers included Mark Sayers from Red Church in Melbourne, Pete Grieg, the 24/7 prayer guy from the UK, and Laura Barringer from the USA. It was a feast for the mind and soul of thought provoking input. Thanks to Laidlaw for an excellent conference, and much to ponder on in the weeks to come.
