PRAYERS

for such a time as this, for prayer and meditation when you can't find the words...

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

by Rev. Robin Palmer 22nd March
(used with permission)

Loving God, you give us every good gift; hear us as we bring our prayers and petitions to you.
We pray for our family and friends and for all who are dear to us,
that in following you and rejoicing in your mercy and love, they may experience your gift of eternal life, now and always. Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for all who follow Christ,
that they may grow in their sense of discipleship and calling to proclaim the Good News to others.
Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for all who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness and because they follow you;
may they find strength and courage; Lord, protect them from the evil one. .
Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who are tired or weary, worn out by their responsibilities and work, for adults and for children alike, that they may know you are the strength of the weak and the refuge of the distressed. Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who live with great anxiety and fear at this time – that they may know your perfect peace and rest in your grace and care. Loving God, hear our prayer.
We pray for those who are critical ill, and those who have been bereaved. Grant healing to the sick, and comfort to those who mourn. Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for all in the medical professions, that they may work wisely to promote health, knowing that you are source of all healing. Give them grace and strength when their resources and energy are depleted in times of crisis. Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who live week to week or month to month depending on their income, who do not have the privilege of great savings and resources. In the face of job losses and closed businesses, may they find support and help from those who are able. Loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray for leaders of the world, that in times of calamity and crisis they may be wise in the decisions and compassionate in their care. Give them strength and resolve to do what is right, and to provide for the well-being and welfare of all. Loving God. Hear our prayer.

God of healing and well-being, as we become more responsible for hygiene and cleanliness for the sake of ourselves and others, as we wash our hands through each day, we ask you to cleanse us of other invisible viruses of the soul: Fear, hate, pride, greed, lust, hostility, supremacy, superiority, selfish interest, and all constriction of the heart. As we join billions of others in this practice, help us feel how deeply we are all connected and equally, infinitely loved by you.

God of our salvation, save us from envy and pride, and teach us to be content with what is enough, so that we may share with those of greater need than ourselves.
We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

PILGRIM GOD

Ray Simpson - Waymarks for the Journey (2009)

Pilgrim God, who accepted such humbling
in your journey of trust on earth,
in my pilgrimage keep me on the paths
of listening and learning, reverence and respect,
simplicity and service
that I may not stray from your authentic steps.

CHRIST THE GOOD SHEPHERD

John Blakesly (ed.) Paths of the Heart: Prayers of Medieval Christians

You are the Good Shepherd,
you laid down your life for your sheep.
I am that sheep which was lost,
and yet you graciously feed me with your body and blood.
Take me up now, and carry me on your shoulders.
What good thing will you deny me,
since you have given me your very self?
Be my shepherd,
and I shall lack nothing
in the green pastures where you have placed me,
until you lead me to the pastures of eternal life.

FOR THE RENEWAL OF OUR HEARTS

Ancient Scottish Prayers (1595)

Instruct our mouths, O Lord, with a new song;
that, our hearts being renewed,
we may always rejoice in thy praise

and in the company of thy saints,
O God, our Strength and our Redeemer. Amen.
